Two schools and a day care center in Brentwood were briefly placed on lockdown this afternoon while police searched for a burglary suspect, a Brentwood police lieutenant said. The search began around noon when police received word that someone had tried to break into a home in the area of Wildflower Loop and Balfour Road, police Lt. Tom Hansen said.Brentwood officers began searching for the would-be burglar, calling in a K-9 unit from Antioch police and ground units from the California Highway Patrol for assistance, Hansen said.

Police contacted Garin Elementary School, Edna Middle School and Aim High Child Care at the Garin campus and advised them to go on lockdown. The lockdown was lifted at about 1:10 p.m., said Jan Steed, director of student services for the Brentwood Union School District.Steed said the schools have a procedure in place for such situations and that things went smoothly as some children were brought indoors from the schoolyard and others were told to stay in their classrooms.

“We were very impressed with our schools,” she said. The district sent out notifications to parents about the lockdown, she said. The suspect was not initially found, but Hansen said information later led police to an 18-year-old Brentwood man, who is now in custody. He said “some good old-fashioned investigation work” led to the arrest. Police have not yet released the teen’s name.No one was injured in the search or the arrest, Hansen said.
