A man snatched a woman’s smartphone from her hands as she sat at a bus stop in Emeryville Thursday morning, police said. The female victim was sitting at an Alameda-Contra Costa Transit bus stop at the corner of San Pablo Avenue and 40th Street around 8:15 a.m. Thursday when a man grabbed her iPhone out of her hand, police said. The victim chased after the man, who then removed a handgun from his waist and pointed it at her.
The victim then stopped pursuing the robber and called police from the MacArthur BART station where she was able to borrow someone’s phone, police said. She told police that she saw the suspect get into a silver four-door Oldsmobile with a California license plate.Police said the car had been recently reported carjacked out of Oakland and that Oakland police had received two robbery reports earlier Thursday morning with a suspect leaving in a similarly described vehicle.
Working with Oakland police, Emeryville detectives were able to track down the suspect and took him and a second suspect into custody later Thursday morning, Emeryville police said. Officers discovered two handguns with the suspects and believe the two arrested suspects are potentially responsible for numerous East Bay robberies.
