A driver on state Highway 1 north of Moss Landing led Monterey County Sheriff’s Deputies on a wild chase early Saturday for nearly six miles before crashing into a mobile home, officials said today. Deputies spotted the driver, identified as Erivan Martinez Chavez, a 20-year-old man with no fixed address, shortly before 12:30 a.m. He had allegedly come close to colliding head on with northbound traffic, and then turned his headlights off and pulled off the roadway to try to evade police.
Deputies tried to pull him over while he was on the shoulder of the road, but Chavez allegedly pulled back on to the highway, pulled a u-turn and fled onto Dolan road. With his headlights still off, he allegedly led deputies on a 5.8 mile pursuit that ended when he crashed into a mobile home. He then fled on foot, but was quickly captured, sheriff’s officials said. Deputies found Chavez in possession of methamphetamine, a pipe, marijuana and “shaved” vehicle keys. The vehicle he was driving was found to be stolen, and he was allegedly under the influence of methamphetamine. Chavez was booked into Monterey County Jail.
