A man arrested for slashing a woman in the face with a meat cleaver at a residential hotel in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood Thursday evening has been identified by police as 51-year-old Lance Gaines. Gaines was arrested following the attack reported around 7:55 p.m. Thursday in the first block of Sixth Street, police said.  The 54-year-old victim got into an argument with a suspect in her apartment, and the suspect picked up the meat cleaver and used it to strike her several times, causing lacerations to her face and upper torso, police spokesman Sgt. Mike Andraychak said.

She was taken to San Francisco General Hospital to be treated for her injuries, which are not considered life-threatening, Andraychak said.  The suspect fled but was later taken into custody by officers at Sixth and Jessie streets and identified as Gaines, according to police.  He allegedly still had the meat cleaver when he was arrested, and was identified as the attacker by both the victim and a witness who was also in the apartment at the time, Andraychak said. Gaines was booked into county jail on suspicion of attempted murder and aggravated assault, he said.
