A Fremont woman was arrested Monday outside a Walmart after a shopper noticed the woman’s baby unattended in a vehicle, police said. Maha Kasim, 41, allegedly left her 15-month-old girl in a vehicle for 30 minutes while she went shopping in the Walmart at 44009 Osgood Road, Detective Bill Veteran said.
A shopper saw the baby in Kasim’s van, a 2003 Honda, called 911, and stayed at the scene until police arrived. Kasim was arrested on suspicion of child neglect at about 1 p.m. Authorities contacted the child’s father, and he took custody of the girl, Veteran said.
According to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, Kasim posted $10,000 bail the same day and was released from custody. The case is pending review, with arraignment tentatively scheduled for March 12.
