Mendocino County Sheriffs Press Release 2/13/12
On 2-13-2012 at approximately 0320 the Mendocino County Sheriffs Communication Center received a 911 telephone call regarding a subject holding someone hostage and then a gunshot being heard in and around 155 Laws Avenue.
Deputies responded to the location and started contacting residents regarding the gunshots. They further heard loud music coming from apartment#15. They knocked on the door several times but could not get anyone to answer. They then pushed on the door, at which time the door opened and they observed a large amount of blood on the floor. They further observed a male crouched down behind a couch adjacent the blood.
Deputies then entered into the residence to provide assistance at which time the male subject moved away from the couch holding a handgun to his head. Deputies further observed an injury to the subject’s foot which appeared to be a gunshot type wound.
Deputies along with Ukiah Police Officers negotiated with the subject for approximately thirty minutes to drop the handgun, at which time the subject finally dropped the firearm and deputies secured him. Medical aid was provided and the subject was subsequently transported to Ukiah Valley Medical Center for treatment.
Deputies learned from witnesses, the subjects statements and evidence in the apartment that the subject had receive a self inflicted gunshot wound to the foot. The subject was further in need of mental health services.
