Officials in Santa Rosa believe that nearly half a dozen students who got sick at a middle school on Friday drank Gatorade laced with drugs, police said. At about 1:25 p.m., officers went to Santa Rosa Middle School after receiving a call that five students had become ill by drinking a suspected liquid form of THC, according to the Santa Rosa Police Department. THC, or Tetrahydrocannabinol, is a chemical derived from marijuana.

An investigation revealed that a 13-year-old student brought the substance to school and passed it to friends in a bottle of Gatorade during lunch, police said. All five students reported feeling side effects of the drug, including dizziness and stomach pains. One student was taken to a hospital for treatment and was later released, police said. The others were sent home with their parents. Police said it was highly suspected that the substance was liquid THC, though no official confirmation had been made as of Sunday and the investigation was ongoing.
