Santa Rosa police said a man was arrested on drug charges after a three-hour standoff this morning at a west Santa Rosa residence. The Santa Rosa Police Department’s gang crimes unit executed a search warrant for 34-year-old Ricky Estrada, a known gang participant, around 7 a.m. in the 2500 block of Plata Court, Sgt. Rainier Navarro said. Officers detained a female at the door and heard loud noises in a rear bedroom, Navarro said.
They found a bedroom access to the attic was open and heard someone moving around in the attic, Navarro said.Officers called out to Estrada, who they believed was in the attic, but received no response. A hostage negotiator then responded to the residence, Navarro said.
Officers then learned Estrada was recently in possession of a firearm and was on probation in Sonoma County for possession of a firearm while under the influence of a controlled substance, Navarro said.A SWAT team with additional hostage negotiators, a K-9 unit from the Petaluma Police Department, an ambulance and fire personnel were then called to the scene, Navarro said.
Officers cordoned off the block for approximately three hours. Estrada surrendered around 11 a.m. and was arrested, Navarro said. Police did not find a gun in the residence but located methamphetamine and drug and gang paraphernalia, Navarro said. Estrada was booked into the Sonoma County jail on drug charges, resisting arrest and felony violation of probation in Sonoma and in Mendocino counties.
