A Concord woman has pleaded not guilty to charges that she suffocated her boyfriend to death in November.Dava Alizabeth-Ann Steen, 41, entered the plea in Contra Costa County Superior Court Thursday morning, almost a month after her arrest on suspicion of murdering her longtime boyfriend, 47-year-old Danny Ray Bennett.Police had initially concluded that Bennett died of natural causes. On Nov. 25, rescue crews responded to the 3600 block of Wren Avenue on reports that he had stopped breathing.

Steen told police that Bennett had a history of serious health problems. But in January, a witness contacted police and said Steen had suffocated and killed Bennett during a fight.Further investigation corroborated that story, police said. Steen is being held in county jail and is set to return to court for a preliminary hearing on Feb. 22, according to the district attorney’s office.
