A resident of the unincorporated community of Oak Hills in Monterey County opened an envelope delivered by mail on Tuesday and found a mysterious white powder inside, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office. The resident called the sheriff’s office at 7:39 p.m. to report the incident. The envelope, which was delivered to a home on Charter Oak Boulevard, did not have a return address.
The home was evacuated, and neighbors were asked to remain indoors, according to the sheriff’s office. Charter Oak Boulevard was blocked off by deputies and the California Highway Patrol. Medical personnel also responded to the scene. The Monterey County hazardous materials team, which consists of Salinas and Seaside firefighters and technicians and Monterey County environmental health officials, analyzed the white power with specialized equipment. They determined the powder to be harmless.
The scene was cleared by 11:30 p.m., sheriff’s officials said. The incident remains under investigation
