Police arrested a suspected drug dealer while staking out a Santa Cruz neighborhood on Friday, police said. At around 7 p.m., while watching the 100 block of Dake Avenue after receiving reports of drug activity at a residence on that block, police saw a car known to belong to Javier Pina leave the house. Pina, 37, of Santa Cruz, had a felony warrant for his arrest for possession of a controlled substance for sales.

Police pulled the car over in the 300 block of Mission Street. Pina was arrested for the warrant and for suspicion of being under the influence of heroin. After a search, police said they located heroin in the car and arrested Pina’s passenger, Jean Perez, a 30-year-old resident of Santa Cruz. Police suspected Perez was under the influence of heroin as well, and both were booked into Santa Cruz County jail.
