* Santa Clara police fatally shot Jesus Nunez Ramirez during a DUI investigation

Police have identified a man who was fatally shot by a Santa Clara police officer during a DUI investigation on Saturday night as 42-year-old Jose Jesus Nunez Ramirez. Ramirez, a Santa Clara resident, was pulled over by Officer Joshua Craig in the 2400 block of Karen Drive at about 9:45 p.m., according to Santa Clara police. Craig, a two-year veteran, was working in uniform and driving a marked police car, police said.

Craig saw that Ramirez had a handgun next to his leg in the car during the DUI investigation, police said.Police said Ramirez became uncooperative and Craig requested assistance.Before additional officers arrived at the scene, police said Ramirez reached for the revolver in his car and Craig shot Ramirez in self-defense.

Ramirez was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Investigators recovered a loaded Colt .38 caliber revolver at the scene, according to police.The shooting is under investigation by the Police Department and the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office.
