Mendocino County Sheriff’s Department Press Release 1/10/12
On 07-15-2010 a Mendocino County Sheriff’s Deputy assigned to the Fort Bragg area was contacted by a citizen.
During the contact, the citizen reported they had gained possession of a lap-top computer while cleaning out the inside of a motor-home they intended to purchase from (S) Miles Arthur Everett. Upon finding the lap-top the citizen turned on the computer and reportedly found images of child pornography.
The citizen left the lap-top in the motor-home and thereafter reported this information to the Sheriff’s Deputy.
The sheriff’s deputy responded to Everett’s residence and confronted him about the possibility of child pornography being on the lap-top. Everett refused to be interviewed or to provide the sheriff’s deputy with the lap-top.
Based upon exigent circumstances, the sheriff’s deputy immediately responded to the motor-home and took possession of the lap-top to preserve any evidence that could be destroyed by Everett.
The sheriff’s deputy then turned over the lap-top to a sheriff’s office detective, who based upon the circumstances obtained a search warrant for the motor-home and Everett’s residence located in the 14000 block of Cypress Lane in Caspar, California.
Detectives responded to the residence to serve the search warrant and contacted Everett. It appeared Everett suspected law enforcement contact because he immediately provided a handwritten letter dated 07-15-2010 that stated he would not cooperate with investigators.
During a search of the residence, four (4) desktop style computers and one (1) lap-top computer was located. One of the desktop computers was on and the monitor showed a message indicating the content of the computer processing unit had been erased.
Detectives seized the computers and forwarded them to the Northern California Computer Crimes Task Force for forensic analysis.
The results of the analysis showed collectively thousands of images of child pornography on some of the computers possessed by Everett. Based upon the analysis, it appeared Everett obtained and shared images of child pornography obtained by accessing the World Wide Web (Internet).
Detectives submitted their investigative report to the Mendocino County District Attorney’s Office and a felony arrest warrant was issued for Everett.
On 12-22-2011 detectives contacted Everett in the 100 block of North Franklin Street in Fort Bragg and arrested him pursuant to the felony arrest warrant. Everett was transported to the Mendocino County Jail where he is currently being held as of the time of this updated press release in lieu of $60,000.00 bail.
Anyone who may have additional information to report in connection with this investigation is urged to call the Sheriff’s Office Tip-Line by calling 707-467-9159.
