A man committed suicide by gunshot after being confronted by police outside the San Francisco Hall of Justice this evening, a police spokesman said. Officers responded to Harriet Street, located on the east side of the building at 850 Bryant St., around 5 p.m. on the report of a gun, police spokesman Officer Carlos Manfredi said.

Police encountered a man holding a gun and drew their own service weapons, at which point the man said “This isn’t for you,” turned his back to the officers and shot himself, Manfredi said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers opened fire during the incident, he said.

The gunshot could be heard from inside the Hall of Justice and brought out much of the top brass of the Police Department, which is headquartered there. The east side of the building remained closed between Harrison and Bryant streets as of 5:45 p.m. because of the investigation.
