A man was arrested after fleeing from police during a traffic stop and nearly colliding with several vehicles on Carmel Valley Road Friday night, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said. Kevin Stapleton, 52, of Pebble Beach was pulled over at approximately 9:19 p.m. for a traffic violation and, Deputy Joseph Crivello said, there was a strong odor of alcohol coming from the suspect.
After a few minutes, Stapleton sped away from the scene, driving down Carmel Valley Road exceeding 85 m.p.h., Crivello said. The suspect passed vehicles on the right shoulder and nearly collided with several passenger vehicles before voluntarily stopping his vehicle, Crivello said.
Deputies attempted to remove the suspect from his vehicle but he was uncooperative and resisted arrest by pulling away from their grasps when he was being taken into custody, Crivello said. The suspect was booked into Monterey County Jail for driving under the influence of alcohol.
