Bystanders helped Gilroy police apprehend a burglary suspect early Sunday morning, police said. Officers responded to a report of an interrupted home burglary in the 700 block of Fifth Street at 12:12 a.m. The homeowner had arrived home to find the suspect fleeing out the back door of the house, police said.

The victim and several other people chased the suspect and detained him until police arrived. Police identified the suspect as 19-year-old Alexander Chavez, of Gilroy. He was arrested on suspicion of burglary and booked into Santa Clara County Jail. The victim’s dog escaped through a gate left open by the intruder, and was still missing Sunday night, police said.
