Police in Walnut Creek have arrested a suspect in a murder reported there on Monday, after releasing two men initially arrested for allegedly participating in 48-year-old Hayward resident Jeffrey Patterson’s slaying. Concord resident Michael Miller, 22, was arrested Thursday when he turned himself in at the Walnut Creek police station, police said.

Contra Costa County sheriff’s deputies first arrested Shannon Alexander, 48, on suspicion of murder at his home in unincorporated Walnut Creek where emergency crews pronounced Patterson dead around 7:20 p.m. Monday. The Hayward man, who knew Alexander, suffered blunt force trauma, according to a Contra Costa County coroner’s office report. After further investigation, the sheriff’s office determined that someone had likely killed Patterson at a home within Walnut Creek city limits.

Alexander was released from jail on Wednesday, and Walnut Creek police arrested resident Frank Castro in connection with the homicide.  Castro, too, has been released from prison and has not been charged with a crime, police said.

Police said Miller is now being held at the Martinez Detention Facility on suspicion of murder.  Anyone with additional information about the murder is asked to contact the Walnut Creek Police Department at (925) 943-5844.
