A suspect arrested Monday night in connection with a man’s murder in Walnut Creek has now been released from jail, the Contra Costa County sheriff’s office announced today. Walnut Creek resident Shannon Mitchell Alexander, 48, was released from police custody Wednesday after further police investigation into the slaying of Hayward resident Jeffrey Mead Patterson, also 48, sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Lee said.

Both men knew each other, but police were unable to establish a motive for the murder. Alexander had been in custody at the Martinez Detention Facility, where he was booked Monday night. Though police initially believed the murder took place at Alexander’s home on San Miguel Drive in unincorporated Walnut Creek, detectives have now determined that Patterson was killed within city limits, Lee said.

The Walnut Creek police department is now handling the investigation along with the sheriff’s office and police continue to maintain contact with Alexander, he said. The Contra Costa County coroner’s office found that Patterson suffered from blunt trauma to his body, but have not yet released the cause of death.
