Investigators have identified a female passenger in a car driven by a man who was seriously wounded when he was shot during a gunfire exchange with police in San Francisco on Wednesday, police said today.However, police spokesman Sgt. Daryl Fong declined to release her name and said investigators are not actively trying to locate her. He said police would release more information about the case later today.

The incident began at about 1:25 p.m. Wednesday when officers in a marked police car pulled over a car on Bush Street, near Larkin Street. The driver of the car got out and fled, and as two officers chased him, he fired at least two shots at them, police said.

The officers were not injured and returned fire, hitting the suspect in the upper torso.He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital to be treated for his injuries, which are considered life-threatening, according to police.While the officers were chasing the suspect, the female passenger in the car slid over to the driver’s seat and drove away, police said.
