The Solano County coroner’s office has identified the victim of a fatal hit-and-run in Fairfield Thursday morning as 70-year-old Rudy Gonzales of Hayward. Fairfield police said Gonzales stopped his vehicle to help jump-start a recreational vehicle in a parking lot in the 4400 block of Central Way around 10 a.m. Thursday. While trying to start the vehicle, Gonzales was somehow struck by it, Lt. Greg Hurlbut said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the recreational vehicle, Michael Wilbert, 52, of Fairfield, allegedly fled the scene without helping Gonzales or reporting the incident, Hurlbut said. He was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run moments later at a nearby business and booked into Solano County Jail, Hurlbut said. Alcohol does not appear to be a contributing factor in the collision, Hurlbut said.
