Oakland Police Solve High Profile Sexual Assault Case
Oakland, CA – On February 8, 2011 a 56 year-old female was walking home after work near 8th and Jackson Streets when she was grabbed from behind, forced to the bottom of her basement, brutally beaten and sexually assaulted. The suspect fled the scene. There were no witnesses to the crime, and the victim could not identify the suspect.
A surveillance tape was recovered that showed a man walking away from the area and public advisory was generated to the media to assist with identifying the person of interest; however no leads were developed as a result. Evidence obtained from the victim’s sexual assault examination was entered into the local, state and national database for convicted offenders (CODIS), and a match to the suspect was made. On October 27, 2011, the DNA profile identified 18 year-old Derrick Parks as the suspect who assaulted the victim.
On November 17, 2011, Oakland Police Department sexual assault investigator Chan Lee presented the case to the Alameda District Attorney’s Office. Parks was charged with multiple counts of rape and attempted rape, forcible sodomy, and charging enhancements representing potential sentencing from 15 years to four life sentences.
