A San Jose police captain has been named the new chief of police for Redwood City, officials announced Tuesday. Meynard “J.R.” Gamez, who has worked on the San Jose police force for more than 25 years, will take over as Redwood City Police Chief on Dec. 2. “J.R.’s track record is exemplary, across the entire range of key attributes that contribute to a dedicated, creative and successful leader,” City Manager of Redwood City Robert Bell said in a statement.
Gamez has been active in San Jose developing community policing and safe neighborhoods initiatives, mentoring youth with the Hispanic Development Corporation’s Youth Leadership Conference, and serving as co-chairman of the Mayor’s Gang Prevention Task Force. “The men and women of the Redwood City Police Department have an exceptional reputation as a professional and dedicated organization, and it’s a privilege to serve on the same team,” Gamez said in a statement.
