A 16-year-old boy was gunned down this week while riding his bicycle in Salinas in what police are calling a gang-related shooting. The boy was riding his bike on Dewey Avenue near Beech Street shortly before 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday when he was chased by unknown suspects in a grayish-green minivan, according to police.
The boy turned north on Beech Street and tried to run away on foot, but a suspect described as a Hispanic male in his 20s, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black pants, got out of the van and started shooting at him. The victim was struck and fell to the ground. The suspect then ran up and shot him several more times before getting back into the van and fleeing.
The van was last seen driving east on Alma Avenue, police said. The boy was found suffering multiple gunshot wounds to his torso and waist, and was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police are hoping more witnesses come forward.
