Police Tuesday identified the man who was fatally shot by police at a San Jose apartment complex Sunday as Varun Kumar. Kumar, 32, of San Jose, was shot by officers who responded to the apartment complex in the 400 block of Wooster Avenue around 11:45 a.m. on Sunday on a report of a suspicious person armed with a firearm, Officer Jose Garcia said.

The officers located and contacted the man in the rear parking lot of the complex, but something happened that caused at least one officer to feel threatened. The officer fired his gun, wounding the suspect. Police identified the officers involved in the shooting as Sgt. Sergio Carabarin, with 28 years of experience; Officer Ryan Kimber, who has 12 years of experience; and Reserve Officer Phil Juan, with 15 years of experience.

The officer that fired a gun has now been identified as Carabarin. Kimber and Juan deployed their Tasers on the suspect, Garcia said. Paramedics were called, but Kumar was pronounced dead at the scene due to his injuries, Garcia said.
