Police today identified the officers who were involved in the fatal shooting of a man at an apartment complex in San Jose on Sunday. The officers were identified as Sgt. Sergio Carabarin, with 28 years of experience; Officer Ryan Kimber, who has 12 years of experience; and Reserve Officer Phil Juan, with 15 years of experience. The three officers were called to a complex on the 400 block of Wooster Avenue around 11:45 a.m. on Sunday on a report of a suspicious person armed with a firearm, Officer Jose Garcia said.
The officers located and contacted the male suspect in the rear parking lot of the complex, but something happened that caused at least one officer to feel threatened. The officer fired his gun, wounding the suspect. That officer has now been identified as Carabarin. Kimber and Juan deployed their Tasers on the suspect, Garcia said. Paramedics were called, but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene due to his injuries, Garcia said. Police are not yet identifying the man. The shooting remains under investigation.
