A man accused of stealing electronics and cash from three schools in Atherton and Menlo Park last month pleaded no contest Thursday to burglary charges and was sentenced to 16 months in state prison, San Mateo County prosecutors said.

Jaime Loya Maldanado, 20, of Menlo Park, was accused of joining several juveniles to burglarize three schools between Sept. 8 and Sept. 14, according to the district attorney’s office. On Sept. 8, Maldanado and others allegedly stole 26 iPads from a classroom at Hillview Middle School, located at 1100 Elder Ave. in Menlo Park, prosecutors said.

More than $400 was also taken from a classroom at German-American International School at 275 Elliott Drive in Menlo Park.At about 3 a.m. on Sept. 14, Maldanado and a juvenile accomplice allegedly entered Laurel Elementary School, located at 95 Edge Road in Atherton. The suspects set up motion alarms, and police responded and quickly apprehended the juvenile, prosecutors said.

Maldanado, who was on felony probation for possession of stolen property in Santa Clara County, was eventually found with the assistance of a police canine and was taken into custody. He pleaded no contest in San Mateo County Superior Court Thursday to two counts of felony second-degree burglary in exchange for the 16-month sentence, according to the district attorney’s office. The case will return to court on Nov. 17 for a hearing on restitution to the victims.
