A man who was shot by police after allegedly stabbing two people inside a home in San Francisco’s Richmond District this morning has died, as has one of the stabbing victims, according to the medical examiner’s office. The stabbing was reported at about 7:30 a.m. in the 600 block of Funston Avenue, police spokesman Lt. Troy Dangerfield said.
Officers arrived and found an elderly man in the doorway with stab wounds to his forearm and hand, Dangerfield said. Officers went upstairs into the home and found an elderly woman bleeding profusely from stab wounds to her upper torso, Dangerfield said. As they attempted to pull the woman to safety, the officers were confronted by the 44-year-old suspect, who was holding a knife in each hand and waving them over his head, Dangerfield said.
An officer used a beanbag weapon against the armed man but it was not effective, and another officer then shot the man with his gun. The two elderly victims and the suspect were taken to the hospital where the woman and the suspect were pronounced dead, according to the medical examiner’s office.
Their names are not being released until their families are notified of the deaths. A third victim, a woman in her 30s or 40s, was found hiding in the back of the home and was unhurt, Dangerfield said. He said investigators believe the suspect and victims knew each other, but did not know if they were related.
Tracy Passero, a woman who said she used to live next door to the home where the stabbing occurred before moving a block away a couple of years ago, said she was shocked to hear what happened. “It’s a really quiet, tranquil block,” Passero said.
