A Petaluma man who allegedly tried to flee security guards when he was caught shoplifting was arrested Sunday on suspicion of strong arm robbery, according to police. Petaluma resident Nicholas Martin, 19, was detained by security guards at the K Mart at 261 N. McDowell Blvd. around 12:30 p.m. on suspicion of shoplifting, according to police Sgt. Steve Nelson. Martin allegedly struggled with the security guards and fled to his car in the parking lot.
A police officer responding to the shoplifting call stopped Martin’s vehicle as it sped out of the parking lot, Nelson said. Martin allegedly tried to flee on foot, but was detained by the officer. The property stolen from K Mart was recovered, and Martin was arrested on suspicion of strong arm robbery. He was booked into Sonoma County Jail in lieu of $40,000 bail. A second man who was with Martin fled the area on foot. He was described as a white male adult in his 20s with a heavy-set build, wearing blue jean shorts and no shirt.
