Santa Clara police have released the name of a wheelchair-bound man who was killed in a hit-and-run while crossing a Santa Clara street on Sunday. Santa Clara resident Robert Walter Schmidt, 68, was struck by a car at the intersection of East Homestead Road and Pomeroy Avenue at about 1 p.m., police said.

Schmidt was found unconscious with life-threatening injuries. He was taken to a hospital, where he died. Investigators believe Schmidt was crossing East Homestead Road at Quince Avenue in his wheelchair when a westbound motorist driving a late 1990s, dark-colored midsize sedan struck him. The car dragged the man about 300 feet, police said.

The driver fled the scene afterward and has not been found. The suspect is described as a male with a medium build who was wearing a white shirt, according to police. Police are asking for the public’s help in finding the driver.
