A man who was one of two people found fatally stabbed in a burning home in Oakland two weeks ago was identified by police today as 73-year-old John Gilbert Navaerette, of Oakland. The bodies were found when firefighters responded to a fire at a two-story building in the 3100 block of Coolidge Avenue at about 1 a.m. on Sept. 11, police said.

Navaerette and 56-year-old Renee Washington were found in a residential unit on the second floor. An autopsy later revealed that Navaerette and Washington had both been stabbed, and investigators believe the fire was started to cover up the crime. Authorities initially were unable to identify the victims.

Washington was the first to be identified, and her name was released on Sept. 16. Six people were displaced by the one-alarm fire, which was extinguished within about 15 minutes, Oakland fire Battalion Chief Darin White said. A witness reported seeing several people running away from the building after the fire started, White said. The blaze caused between $50,000 and $70,000 in damage, he said. Oakland police are treating the case as a homicide.
