Published by Junior Staff Writer on September 20, 2011

A man arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with a fatal shooting in San Francisco’s Mission District on Labor Day will appear in court this afternoon. Joseph Johnson has been charged with the killing of Dwayne Spruell, 45, district attorney’s spokesman Seth Steward said. Spruell, a San Francisco resident, was shot at about 2:15 a.m. on Sept. 5 in the first block of Camp Street, near Guerrero Street, police said.
Officers responding to a report of shots fired found him lying on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound to the head and another to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The homicide was the third in the Mission District in less than a week, and prompted the Police Department to step up patrols in the neighborhood to try to quell the violence. Johnson is set to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. at the San Francisco Hall of Justice.
