A juvenile boy was arrested Thursday afternoon in San Leandro after a high school security official found a loaded gun in his backpack, police said. San Leandro High School campus security was called at 7:41 a.m. to the 13400 block of Bancroft Avenue, where some students were reportedly smoking marijuana at a bus stop near the school.

When security arrived at the stop, one of the students tried to run away and left his backpack, police said. A campus security official searched the backpack and found a loaded firearm. An official ran after the boy and caught him as he was jumping over a nearby fence, according to police.

San Leandro police officers arrived at the scene shortly afterward and arrested the boy, who was also found with a usable amount of marijuana. He was taken to juvenile hall after a parent was notified.
