Two men fighting in Hayward Thursday evening ended when one was shot, and a suspect is in police custody, police said. The two 20-year-old men were fighting for an unknown reason on Newhall Street between Huntwood Avenue and Taft Street, according to Hayward police.

The two men both lived in the neighborhood, police said, and family members of the suspect tried to stop the fight but were unsuccessful. The suspect retrieved a gun from his residence and shot the victim, and fled the scene on foot.

The victim was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. About an hour later police arrested a suspect as he was getting into a car with two women several blocks from the scene of the shooting.
