A man barricaded himself into a home on the 4300 block of San Pablo Dam Road this evening after police responded to a report that he was beating a woman, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office received a call reporting that the man was beating a woman around 7:15 p.m., spokesman Jimmy Lee said. When deputies responded, the man went into a home and armed himself with a handgun.
Initially, three children and the woman were still in the house with the suspect, but after about half an hour they were released safely, Lee said. The suspect remains inside the house. He has been talking with police and hostage negotiators are trying to get him to surrender peacefully. Residents of the block are receiving automated phone calls advising them to take shelter in the nearest safe place for the next four hours or until they receive further instructions. The sheriff’s office is asking residents to close all windows and doors and stay off the phone unless they need to report a life threatening emergency.
