Two Oakland schools were evacuated today and police have shut down an East Oakland neighborhood as they continue searching for carjacking suspects who fled after an officer-involved shooting. Shortly before noon, officers in East Oakland spotted a car that had been reported stolen out of West Oakland and tried to pull it over. The driver refused to yield and led police on a short chase before the car’s occupants got out and ran away near 86th and Bancroft avenues, police said.
At some point, police fired at one suspect, but it appears no one was injured. Sgt. Chris Bolton said at least one suspect brandished a gun and may have fired at officers. Two suspects were arrested but two remain at large, Capt. Ersie Joyner said. Police believe they may still be in the area of the original officer-involved shooting. One suspect was arrested in the general area of the shooting, but the other suspect was arrested in Tracy by the California Highway Patrol.
Police said his mother picked him up from Oakland and was reportedly driving him to Stockton. Police closed streets between 88th and 84th avenues, from Bancroft Avenue to Olive Street, and two schools in the area were placed on lockdown and later evacuated. Castlemont High School went into lockdown between noon and 12:30 p.m. and was evacuated around 4 p.m., Oakland Unified School District spokesman Troy Flint said. East Oakland Pride Elementary School was placed on lockdown around 11:30 a.m. and was evacuated at 2 p.m., school officials said. Flint said school officials sent students home. Bolton said police were advising people to avoid the area and are asking residents in that neighborhood to report any suspicious activity.
