Police have identified a woman who was fatally shot in her Richmond home early Friday morning as 67-year-old Sushilawati Prasad, of Fiji. Prasad was shot during a home invasion robbery in the 3200 block of Moran Avenue in Richmond shortly before 4 a.m. Friday, police said. Prasad’s son, identified by police as Dinesh Kumar, 46, was also shot during the robbery and was in critical condition Friday after suffering multiple gunshot wounds, Lt. Bisa French said.
Five people were in the home at the time of the shooting, including two children, French said. One suspect is in custody today, and police continue to search for a second suspect, she said. Investigators believe the crime was a random act and are working to determine a potential motive for the shooting. “Although it is random, we believe the suspects selected the family because they thought there was some kind of money in the house,” French said.
