A Santa Rosa man and woman were arrested on suspicion of assaulting officers after a DUI incident Tuesday morning, police said. Officers responded to the 1800 block of Beachwood Drive on reports of a hit-and-run crash around 2:15 a.m. A vehicle had hit a stop sign and a witness told police that a man was seen running away from the scene.
The vehicle was registered to a nearby home and when police arrived they heard screaming coming from inside the residence, according to police. A man matching the suspect description came out of the home, yelled at the officers and refused their commands,police said. Officers followed the suspect inside and into a bedroom, where the suspect attempted to punch an officer.
Police said the suspect was taken to the ground in an effort to restrain him and take him into custody. The suspect kicked an officer in the head at least twice and punched him several times, police said. Family members tried to intervene on the suspect’s behalf and police said a woman punched an officer in the face during the struggle.
Emergency assistance was called in and the suspect was taken to a hospital for injuries suffered during the struggle. Police arrested Felipe Gutierrez, 22, on suspicion of battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, driving under the influence, and driving without a driver’s license. Lucia Gutierrez, 27, was arrested on suspicion of battery on a police officer.
