A 29-year-old Pittsburg woman was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver as she was crossing the street in Pittsburg on Monday evening, Pittsburg police Lt. Ron Raman said today. The victim, identified by the Contra Costa County coroner’s office as Esmeralda Becerra, had just gotten off a BART train and was crossing West Leland Road near Southwood Drive when the accident happened shortly after 7 p.m. She was in the crosswalk and had stepped a couple of feet into the road when the driver, who was apparently trying to make the light, struck her and then fled, Raman said.
Becerra was taken to John Muir Medical Center, where she died. The driver, 26-year-old Luis Ramirez, returned to the scene and was arrested about 45 minutes after the crash. He told police he fled because he was afraid, Raman said. Ramirez has been booked into county jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run causing great bodily injury. Investigators are also looking at whether speed could have been a factor in the crash, Raman said.
