Police are looking for a driver who sped away from a Petaluma police officer in a stolen car on Wednesday morning. An officer conducting radar speed checks near Lakeville Highway at Pine View Way at about 8 a.m. noticed the suspect driving at 63 mph in a 45 mph zone and tried to pull the car over. Instead of stopping, the driver, described as a Hispanic man about 30 years old with a dark mustache and shaved head, made an illegal U-turn and accelerated away, police said. The officer lost sight of the car near Frates Road and Ely Boulevard South. Police later found the vehicle abandoned on Calle Ranchero Drive and searched that area but did not find the suspect. Investigators learned the car had been reported stolen two days earlier in Petaluma.
