A Santa Clara man was arrested at a hospital Sunday after he drove the wrong way on Interstate Highway 880 and crashed into another car, killing its driver, a California Highway Patrol said. The crash was reported at about 5:45 a.m., when 20-year-old Ray Salinas drove a Chevrolet Malibu onto southbound I-880 while traveling north, CHP Officer JaNean Reynolds said.
Salinas crashed head-on into a Honda Civic that was traveling south, Reynolds said. The driver of the Honda, a 21-year-old San Jose woman, was instantly killed and pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Salinas was taken to Valley Medical Center with major injuries, Reynolds said.
He was arrested Sunday for felony driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, driving the wrong way, and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
