Three people were arrested after an investigation into an electrical fire uncovered $100,000 worth of marijuana plants at a Gilroy home last week, Gilroy police said. Gilroy firefighters were investigating a fire at a home in the 7700 block of Laurel Drive when they found a number of marijuana plants, police said. Police served a search warrant at the home and three suspects — Gilroy residents Veronica Chavez, 39, Alicia Chavez, 60, and Manuel Fonseca, 26 — were taken into custody on Friday, according to police. Investigators seized more than 40 mature marijuana plants, firearms, a quarter-pound of processed marijuana and marijuana sales paraphernalia, police said.

The three suspects were booked into Santa Clara County Jail on charges of cultivating marijuana, selling marijuana and criminal conspiracy, police said. Police say these types of indoor marijuana operations seem to be increasingly common in Santa Clara County. They urge community members to be aware of suspicious activity in their neighborhoods, saying indoor marijuana grows can create fire and health hazards.
