Police have identified a man who was shot and killed in the parking lot of a Watsonville Target store on Saturday night as Prunedale resident Gustavo Saragoza Diaz. Officers responded to reports of gunfire outside the Target at 1415 Main St. around 6:15 p.m., Watsonville police said.

They found Diaz and a 25-year-old woman suffering from gunshot wounds in the parking lot. Diaz was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not determined his exact age but believe he was 19 or 20. The woman was taken to Watsonville Community Hospital to be treated for injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening. “She is doing fine,” police spokesman Sgt. Saul Gonzalez said today.

Investigators said it appears that the victims, who were dating, were walking out of Target toward their car when a green Honda Accord drove by them. The Accord circled the parking lot and approached them again as they reached their car, police said. The Honda stopped and someone inside opened fire, hitting the couple, before the driver accelerated away, according to police.

The shooting is being investigated as gang-related, but it does not appear to be connected to other recent murders in Santa Cruz County, police said. Detectives are looking for new information from possible witnesses to the shooting who were walking or driving in the parking lot, which had a steady flow of traffic that evening.
