Prosecutors have filed misdemeanor charges against a 66-year-old man accused of groping a 14-year-old girl in a park in Danville last week, according to Danville police Lt. Jeff Moule. Natesan Arumugam, an Indian national who was visiting relatives in Danville, is scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon in Contra Costa County Superior Court in Martinez on charges of lewd and lascivious acts on a child and sexual battery, according to court records.
The alleged assault happened at about 8:30 p.m. on July 14, Moule said. The victim was walking past the tennis courts in Diablo Vista Park when a man, later identified as Arumugam, allegedly grabbed her and touched her chest. The girl broke free and ran to a family car while the man fled into a wooded area.
Police canvassed the neighborhood and, based on tips from neighbors, officers arrested Arumugam on Friday. Arumugam remained in custody today on a no-bail immigration hold, according to county jail records. Bail for the two misdemeanor charges was set at $25,000.
