Five people were arrested on suspicion of carjacking and robbery in unincorporated Watsonville on Thursday, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office. The suspects are 19-year-old Watsonville resident Erick Ivan Valencia-Menera and four juvenile accomplices, sheriff’s officials said. The five are suspected of carjacking and robbing a man at about 9:35 p.m. while he was stopped at a stop sign at the intersection of Sill and Hall roads in the Watsonville and Las Lomas areas, according to the sheriff’s office.

Valencia-Menera allegedly held a knife to the victim’s throat and demanded he hand over his wallet and get out of the vehicle, sheriff’s officials said. Valencia-Menera then got behind the wheel of the victim’s black 2002 Cadillac Escalade and drove away with the four juvenile accomplices, sheriff’s officials said. Valencia-Menera later led Santa Cruz County sheriff’s deputies on a pursuit, which ended in a rollover crash in Soquel. One juvenile suspect was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose with unknown injuries. The other four were taken to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas for a medical evaluation and released. No other injuries were reported. Deputies recovered the knife used in the crime.
