East Palo Alto police are conducting parole and probation sweeps throughout the city this morning as part of an ongoing crackdown on gang activity. The sweeps are partly in response to the June 5 shooting death of 3-month-old Izack Jesus Jimenez Garcia, who was killed when two people opened fire on his family as they left a baby shower in East Palo Alto.
Investigators believe the family was mistaken for Sureno gang members and that the shooting was in retaliation for a gang-related beating in Redwood City the previous week. Acting police Capt. Jeff Liu said today the case has captured the hearts of community members, and that today’s searches are the beginning stages of an effort to let gang members know that gang activity won’t be tolerated in the city.
“A 3-month-old baby is not collateral damage,” Liu said. The sweeps were still under way mid-morning, and Liu said police would release more information on the operation later today.
