* Ericka Gallego Pleaded Not Guilty to Charges of Kidnapping Her Granddaughter in Southern California

Published by on June 9, 2011

A Southern California woman accused of abducting her 4-month-old granddaughter from her home in Knightsen last month pleaded not guilty today to kidnapping and residential burglary charges, according to the district attorney’s office. Ericka Gallego, a 58-year-old El Monte resident, remained in custody today in lieu of $5 million bail. She is scheduled to return to court June 28 to set a date for a preliminary hearing. The baby’s parents woke up on the morning of May 22 to find their infant, Ramy Gallego, missing from her bassinet, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff’s investigators have said they believe Ericka Gallego snuck into her son and daughter-in-law’s house sometime during the night, snatched the baby from her bed and then took a taxi back to El Monte in Los Angeles County, where she allegedly claimed the child was hers. El Monte police arrested her on May 22, and Ramy was safely reunited with her family.
