A Southern California woman accused of kidnapping her 4-month-old granddaughter last month and then claiming the child was hers is scheduled to be arraigned in Contra Costa County Superior Court in Martinez this afternoon. Ericka Gallego, a 58-year-old El Monte resident, has been charged with kidnapping and residential burglary.
Investigators allege that she snuck into her son’s house late on May 21 or early the morning of May 22 and abducted Ramy Gallego from her bassinet while her family slept. The baby’s parents discovered that she was missing at about 6 a.m. on May 22 and the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office launched a major search. Investigators have said that Gallego allegedly took a bus and a taxi from El Monte to Knightsen, kidnapped Ramy and then took a taxi all the way back home.
She was arrested the evening of May 22 and Ramy was safely returned to her mother the next morning. Gallego remained in custody in Los Angeles County Jail in lieu of $5 million bail until Tuesday. She was booked into Contra Costa County Jail in Richmond on Tuesday afternoon, sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Lee said.
