A man who was shot to death in Rodeo on Monday night has been identified as 22-year-old James Newman Jr., a Contra Costa County deputy coroner said today. The sheriff’s office received a call at about 10:15 p.m. from a resident who said gunshots had been heard in the area, but the person didn’t know where, sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Lee said.

Deputies arrived a few minutes later and began searching the neighborhood. Meanwhile, the California Highway Patrol received a 911 call from someone else reporting that there was a gunshot victim in the 1200 block of Tullibee Court, Lee said. Deputies found the victim, who was later identified as Newman, a Rodeo resident, and administered first aid and CPR until paramedics arrived.

Paramedics pronounced Newman dead at about 10:40 p.m., Lee said. As of this morning, no motive for the shooting had been determined, no suspects had been identified and no witnesses had been found, Lee said. Investigators are asking anyone with information about the case to call the sheriff’s dispatch center at (925) 646-2441.
