Burlingame police Capt. Ed Wood has been appointed to serve as the city’s police chief, according to the city manager’s office. Wood has served as Burlingame’s Acting Police Chief since December 2009, when he was asked to head the department while the city considered merging police services with San Mateo Police Department, City Manager Jim Nantell said in a statement. “The city of Burlingame has been very fortunate in having someone of Ed’s caliber and dedication serving as our Interim Police Chief for the past 17 months,” Nantell said.
The San Mateo and Burlingame police departments decided to develop a plan to merge their respective police records and dispatch operations, but will not pursue a full department merger, Nantell said. Wood served in the Belmont Police Department from 1986 to 2007, where he was an officer, sergeant and commander. A father of two, Wood lives with his wife in San Carlos. Wood’s appointment is effective immediately. A badge-pinning ceremony will take place at the Burlingame City Council meeting on June 6.
