A 17-year-old senior at the Castlewood Leadership Preparatory High School in East Oakland was killed in a shooting incident about five blocks away from the school shortly before 2:30 p.m. today, according to a school spokesman. Oakland Unified School District spokesman Troy Flint said the victim, Ditiyan Franklin Jr., was scheduled to graduate from high school in a few weeks.
Oakland police spokeswoman Holly Joshi said police were called to 2421 Ritchie St., which is near Arroyo Viejo Park, at 2:26 p.m. after receiving a report of a shooting. Joshi said the victim was taken to Highland Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly afterward. The Castlemont campus, which hosts three small schools, including the Leadership Preparatory High School, is located at 8601 MacArthur Blvd., which is about five blocks away from the shooting scene.
Flint said there is no indication at this point that the shooting was connected to the school. Joshi said police do not have any information about suspects at this time. She said a large crowd gathered at the shooting scene but that most people left before giving statements to police.
